Regional manager of pvt firm click on fraudulent link, loses 1L

Pune: A regional manager (45) of a Bengaluru-based medicine company posted in Maharashtra was duped of Rs1 lakh after he clicked on a fraudulent link in a bid to seek police help after a minor accident recently.He registered a complaint with the Hadapsar police on Aug 12.Senior inspector Sanjay Mogle of Hadapsar police on Thuesday said, "the regional manager called ‘Dial 112'. The Solapur rural police control room received the call. The control room then relayed the message to Pandharpur police, which then contacted the complainant and asked him to registered an FIR in the accident when a truck damaged complainant's car door on July 24 near Savleshwar toll naka on Latur-Solapur highway. He, however, did not register any FIR and continued his work and reached Latur."In his complaint, he stated that later cybercrooks sent him a link on a social media site. The cybercrooks asked him to pay a pending e-challan of Rs 905 if he wanted police help in the accident case.Mogle said, the complainant clicked on the link, but the payment did not process. The police officer said the crooks gained access to his cellphone and bank account, which had Rs 15,000 at the time. They also generated pin numbers, the officer said, adding that the victim realised that he was tricked after he received text messages that Rs 99,999 was transferred minutes after his salary of Rs 1.98 lakh was deposited on Aug 3.The crooks did nine transactions of Rs 10,000 each and one transaction of Rs 999 for transferring money from his account to a digital wallet. The victim then blocked the bank account number, he said, adding that a letter has been sent to the digital wallet directing them to share details of the transactions done by the crooks. Ends.
